Cameraphone is the new polaroid

There is certainly something to be said for the immediate beauty of a polaroid. Holding it in your hand can reveal a totally new way to experience images, or just remind you of a favorable one.

But ultimately, when we think about our use of resources the polaroid is a fading one. The luxury of having the entire photographic process compressed to a single machine is both gone, and here again. The cameraphone revives the polaroid’s power to transform time space and objects (and objects does include humans) before our eyes. The difference lies in the material consequences. While the cameraphome still consumes energy, it does not tax non-renewable energy sources as the polaroid does.

Three cheers for “same same but different”.
