constantly affirmed as a hero in mind–a hero hero. Today in class we listened to partialities of the Milan recording of Empty Words, which if you’ve never heard it, is an exercise in audience participation to say the least. In the midst of three thousand people–many of them screaming and behaving like children in a cafeteria–in an opera house, here is the aged Cage reading from his composition without the slightest indication that he is even in the same room as the animals.
To not only maintain composure, but also to be performing in the midst of a situation like this is evidence of both composure, and concentration.
I think that I will soon compose some kind of music for the human voice.
New York is a big place. I’m meeting with Richard Kostelanetz tomorrow.
